Зачем люди учат иностранные языки

I have never been to Russia. I know absolutely nothing about it, the country, the culture, absolutely nothing, except I heard there are bears there, and Tatu fangirls. I don't know one word in the language and looking at it boggles my brain. I am English, and I know only that and a bit of Spanish, so maybe I am going in too deep here.
But Russian looks so delightfully complicated I can't resist wanting to learn. Will it be overly difficult, do you think? There are no classes here whatsoever, and no Russians I know live in my area at all. Any advice on where to (inexpensively) start?
